I live in a country that not only doesn’t recognise my existence, but has an entrenched system in place to chokehold it. Germany, once the oppressors of the Jewish people, believe that they are now acting as their representatives on all matters related to antisemitism.
Except, they don’t consult diverse Jewish identities when making such determinations on what is or isn’t antisemitic. A more accurate description would be that Germany acts on behalf of Israel’s interests. In this country, anti-Zionism is equated to antisemitism and Palestinians are reduced to an annoying hinderance that the state is forced to deal with.
As a result, anti-Palestinian racism in this country is rampant. Here is a short list of examples of anti-Palestinian racism in Germany :
In 2019, the Bundestag signed an anti-BDS resolution that classifies it as inherently antisemitic, essentially barring organizations that support the boycott from accessing public funds and public spaces. The resolution has enabled universities, state governments, and public institutions to deny Palestinians the right to free speech and assembly.
German police remove pro-Palestinian students from a university student council meeting.
Zionist organizations targeting German Palestinian academics by secretly gathering information about them.
Deutsche Welle fires 7 Arab and Palestinian journalists for being antisemitic and has a racist Islamophobic self described “Arab Israeli” to conduct the investigation. Obviously the firings were bogus.
Berlin bans protests for Palestine to commemorate the Nakba. Even a vigil that was planned after the murder of Shireen Abu Akleh was also forbidden from taking place.
Berlin arrested and fined anyone who held a Palestinian flag or even wore a keffiyeh. Over 170 people were racially profiled, they later admitted to it.
On May 15th 2022, the center-right Christian Democratic Union’s parliamentary group in the Abgeordnetenhaus of Berlin, the city-state’s parliament, adopted a 10-point plan calling for preventative detention of “well-known antisemites” in the run-up to pro-Palestinian events in the city.
Germany refuses to investigate the murder of a Palestinian family with German citizenship that was killed by Israel in Gaza even though they are legally obligated to.
Goethe-Institut, a German cultural nonprofit based in Hamburg and largely funded by the German government, disinvited Palestinian poet and activist Mohammed El-Kurd from participating because they think he’s antisemitic.
German politicians, media and public freaking out because artists involved in a big art festival were Palestinian and anti-Zionists.
Germany only has a pro-Israel stance in the classroom. I did an investigative report about it here.
A new report published by the German Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK) that focuses on “prevention and intervention against Israel-related antisemitism” is pushing for further crackdowns on pro-Palestine solidarity, and even discusses moving toward the criminalization of this kind of speech and activism. It even discusses banning maps of historic Palestine.
Hate campaign against Palestinian journalist Nemi El Hassan because she joined a protest for Palestine one time.
There is no such thing as a “Palestinian” to Germans. If a refugee comes from Palestine, they are labeled as “stateless” or “undetermined.”
Deutsche Welle, again, took down an interview of Palestinian journalist Ali Abunimeh and claimed it “regrets” having him on.
Antisemitism commissioners shutting down art exhibits on the Nakba.
The same antisemitism commissioner sends secret letters to event organizers to disinvite an anti-Zionist Israeli, Shir Hever.
An antisemitism commissioner targeting Jewish artist Adam Broomberg by saying he legitimises terror against Jews for being pro-Palestinian.
German teacher, Christoph Glanz, who supports BDS was harassed by Germans and almost got fired from his job.
Amnesty International writes a report calling Israel an apartheid state. Amnesty’s Germany branch disassociates from it and says : “to counteract the danger of instrumentalisation on misinterpretation of the report, the German section of Amnesty will not plan or carry our any activities around this report”
The German Luftwaffe will be joining the Israeli Air Force to fly over Palestine end of this month, to celebrate 75 years since Al-Nakba. Yes, they will celebrate together... over Palestinian skies.
Fridays for Future Germany distances itself from FFF National because they are against apartheid. FFFG apparently, is not.
Frankfurt cancels a Roger Waters concert because they say he’s antisemtic
They did the same to Talib Kweli (i really wanted to go to that btw)
Palestinian journalist Khaled Barakat was also banned from speaking in Berlin.
So was Rasmea Odeh
They attacked post-colonial scholar Achille Mbembe and called him an antisemite because he called Israel an apartheid state.
Then they came up with a new phrase : postcolonial antisemitism. How deranged is that?
And there is more where that came from. Unfortunately. As long as Germany is attempting to remain a European power, and arguably the leader of the European world- it will use its unwavering support for Israel to absolve itself from its past to prove themselves again.
Subsequently, Palestinians and their supporters will feel its consequences.
